David Edgerton on Innovation - Dictionary of Arguments

Morozov I 167
Innovation/Edgerton/Morozov: Edgerton thesis: A large part of the recent history of technology is dominated by reports that give priority to invention and innovation over the actual use of technology and equipment. We tend to forget that most innovations and inventions have no consequences - and those that usually require substantial repairs and maintenance to continue working.
We also tend to discard the important role played by older technologies as newer, faster and shinier alternatives are introduced. We consider the Second World War as the war of the motorized vehicle, while it could have been, if at all, the war of the horse: As Edgerton points out, Nazi Germany used 625,000 horses during its invasion of the Soviet Union.(1)
