Evgeny Morozov on Science - Dictionary of Arguments

I 249
Science/Data/citation/citation index/Morozov: Mendeley ((s) Literature management software) registers which scientific data is quoted by which researchers and how often and where.(1)
Morozov: at first glance, there is not much to criticize about this new level of knowledge.
Problems:
1. It favours the tendency to classify scientific output more and more according to measurable quantities.
2. The even greater restriction on publication possibilities when climbing the scientific ladder has an impact on the quality ((s) the content) of the publications. This is shown by a study of the Wall Street Journal: editors of some science journals may have rejected serious articles because they did not cite sufficient publications published in their own journals. (2)
Scholarly Kitchen Blog/Morozov: dealt with a particular article, published in a magazine called Medical Science Monitor. The article cited 490 articles; 445 of which appeared in another journal, Cell Transportation. Partly as a result of this article, Cell Transportation's impact factor increased by 21 percent between 2009 and 2010. That would not be very suspicious if the two magazines did not have so much in common: three of the four editors who contributed to the Medical Science Monitor article were also members of Cell Transportation's editorial board.(3)
Morozov: this is a win-win situation for everyone except science. (...) Ultimately, this is also a consequence of increasing quantification.
