Function/Functional properties of actions/Gärdenfors: functional properties of actions are not easy to analyze in object categories. E.g. Paul Auster asks in his book City of Glass: What happens when a thing (sic, not action) no longer fulfills its function? Is it still the same thing? (Auster, 1992, p.77).
Solution/Gärdenfors: it is about what a thing can do or what it affords.

The expression "afford" is borrowed from Gibson's theory of perception (Gibson, 1979). However, Gibson interprets the concept realistically, i.e. independent of the viewer, while I refer the expression to the conceptual space (of the viewer).
Thesis on Functional Properties/Gärdenfors: a functional property of an object is a convex set of actions in which the object is involved in the underlying force patterns.
Ultimately, functional properties can be explained principally by forces.
