VI 60
Characters/signs/Carnap: three kinds: 1. the character itself (enclosed in double quotes, for example if its spelling will be discussed) - 2nd argument character (in brackets) if its meaning is at stake - e.g. the notion ‹7›. (We can also use ›VII›, but not ‹5+2›: 3. meaning characters (brackets) e.g. "[7] is odd" - here we can also use [5 + 2] and [VII].
Habermas III 373
Signs/Carnap/Habermas: after Karl Bühler viewed the complex of symbols only functionally, Carnap made it accessible under syntactic and semantic aspects of an internal language analysis. It is not the isolated sign that carries meanings, but elements of a language system, i.e. sentences whose form is determined by syntactic rules and whose semantic content is determined by the reference to designated objects or facts.
