VII 146
Translation /Carnap: the field linguist who explores an unknown language first discovers that certain objects are designated by a given word and then determines the intention of the word.
VII 148
Radical translation/Carnap: mainly based on predicates applicable to observable things, such as "blue" and "dog".
It is generally accepted that the field linguist can determine from spontaneous and provoked utterances whether the person is willing to apply a given predicate to a given thing or not, i.e. whether he or she refers to the predicate as the thing.
By compiling several such results, the linguist can first determine the extension of the predicate "dog" in an area given to the native, then determine the extension of the contradictory (i.e. to which he does not wish to apply the predicate) and finally determine the indefinite cases. >Radical Interpretation.
