Substance: QuineVsSeparation nature/object.
III 270
Identity/Time/Change/Heraclitus/QuineVsHeraclitus/: how can one say that a thing that changes its substance remains identical with itself?
The key lies not in the concept of identity but in the concepts of "object" and "time".
Def Object/Thing/Quine: is at any moment the sum of the simultaneous instantaneous states of atoms or other small physical particles distributed in space.
And over time, it is the sum of its successive instantaneous states.
QuineVsHeraclitus: we can step twice into the same flow. What we cannot do is to step twice into the same temporal stage (time stage) of the flow. (At least not if this part is shorter than the time we need to get into it.)
V34
The reification of permanent bodies exceeds in principle the resources of observation sentences, categorical ones as well as others. The reification of substances has always been a theory.
