Lexical: lexical is the opposite of indexical. Lexical meaning provides a rule for determining the reference relatively to the utterance.
Example morning star: the lexical meaning in itself does not determine which object is referred to. The lexical meaning provides a rule for determining the reference relative to each expression.
"I": has the same lexical meaning when you utter this word and when I do. But the reference of each is another.
>Reference.
II 280
Lexical meaning: (is not indexical) has two components:
1. expression of the type of entity,
2. a certain and definable form, e.g. "yesterday", the entity is a day, and the relation is to a day which lies before this utterance.
Cf. >Indexicality.
