Res cogitans: res cogitans (thinking substance) is an expression by R. Descartes (R. Descartes, Meditationes II, 15). The res cogitans is compared by him with the extended substance (res extensa). In this way he establishes a dualism between the mental and the material. According to Descartes, the thinking substance does not require any expansion.
